Global trends - M&A activity in 2010.

During 2009 the focus of global M&A activity began to switch from Western Europe to SE Asia, where Asian companies accounted for almost 30% of all transactions. On a sector-by-sector basis, M&A activity was busier in strong sectors, such as energy, utilities, health care, and pharmaceutical.

Overall 2009 declined from 2007/2008 where levels were at their lowest since 2002/2003. Most of the reduction during the past two years came about because of a 29 percent decline in market capitalization.

Facts and figures in the SME market in ANZ are hard to quantify, but M&A activity from 2004 to the end of last year reflected the decline as shown by the U.S. trends.
